Today I saw a photo and that photo made me cry.
This is said photo.
For those of you who might not be familiar with its context, it's a Halloween party and the man in blackface is pretending to be Trayvon Martin while the 'Neighbourhood Watch' guy is supposed to be George Zimmerman.
There are so many things incredibly wrong with photo. Obviously, there's the blackface. But more importantly, it's the fact that the Trayvon Martin case was a case about racial profiling, essentially discrimination. The reason why it was so widely covered was because Zimmerman, being part of the Neighbourhood Watch, followed Trayvon home from a convenience store and shot him, claiming self-defence. Trayvon had a bag of Skittles and a can of Arizona Fruit Juice Cocktail on him when he died.
I'm not black, but I felt their rage and heartbreak when Zimmerman was acquitted of all charges earlier this year. Why? Because I'm a minority, same as them.
Sure, I'll never worry about my relatives being killed unjustly to the extent some black people will, but I sure as hell understand what it's like to be defined by my race, better than white people, at least enough to know that using Trayvon Martin (who has become a symbol of injustice and racial profiling) as a Halloween costume is the most disgusting thing anyone could ever do.
Don't fool yourself into thinking racism is dead. We've just gotten better at hiding it, at least until Halloween rolls around. It seems that the week preceding October 31st is always marked by a surge in black face paint and a dumb celebrity being caught in a blackface scandal before claiming that 'it was done out of respect and admiration for the black actor.'
The supportive tweets of people doing blackface usually run along the lines of 'inoffensive', 'just a joke', and even 'what's the big deal? black people can do white face we aint mad lol' (honest to god, someone wrote this). To the first two responses claiming that blackface is a source of comedy, I'll direct you to this http://gokicker.com/2013/10/28/blackface-never-okay/
The third comment, when read, sounds reasonable enough. We're all equal, right? Race doesn't really matter anymore, so it makes sense for us to poke fun at the fact that people still think it's an issue.
Wrong. No matter how hard you try to spin it, white people are still considered the top of the food chain. They are the ones whose character and personalities can be deciphered from the colour of their skin. If you don't get what I'm saying, think of it like this:
You can put on a mohawk and an olive green combat jacket and people will know you're Travis Bickle. But in order to be Nick Fury, you have to put on a black suit, an eyepatch and brown face paint, because apparently the defining characteristic of Nick Fury is the colour of his skin.
That's where racism lies, because apparently characters of colour can not be distinguished by what they wear, how they act, what they look like, only by their skin. That's why, twitter user, people don't do white face, because institutionalized racism has prompted us to consider white skin as normalcy, to the extent where race is only mentioned in relation to non-whites (eg. the asian male, the black woman).
I'm tired and saddened by this repulsive Instagram picture so I'll end it here. I feel like I haven't explained it properly but screw it, I'll probably edit it later. Right now, I just want to go to sleep and hope that when I wake up, the world will be a better place.

thoughts on YG's 'Winner' Finale
- i'm happy Team A won
- but their performances today were just so-so
- 'just another boy' was a pretty shit song to begin with so good on Team B for making it passable
- taehyun i love you boy but you needa control your breathing its making the song sound ratchet
- the dance battle holy hell did Team A win that one
- i mean, Team B you're great dancers and all but everytime you pull out your hip hop swag routine it all feels like the same shit and that's not what you should have done in the finale (part of me believes this is down to lack of choreographing talent and youth)
- but seunghoon i was seriously not expecting THAT
- honestly in-fucking-credible, the best dance routine in the entire show; seunghoon doesn't get enough credit for his talents in choreographing
- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=topWTEyVhaA this is the dance if anyone cares, it's amazing and when taeyang smiled i just felt my heart burst because you just know he was just as proud of seunghoon as i am
- as for the self-composition...
- Team B i really have to give you credit for using those shrill-ass vocals to your advantage
- but junhwe man you really stepped it up tonight; your tone is so nice to listen to and you have such great control, why aren't you main vocal????
- jinhwan i know yg likes you and that's probably why you're main vocal but PLZ singing lessons from junhwe
- the other two (dongguk and yonghyun??? idk) you guys are ok i guess but i can't shake the feeling that you're more like backup dancers rather than part of the group
- i'm probably in the minority here, but i was uncomfortable with bi's literal spotlight (i've talked about him being metaphorically in the spotlight but it actually happened in this ep so lol)
- you're the leader, yes, you're yg's golden boy, yes, your lyrics were apparently amazing, yes, but what makes you so special that you have to quite literally outshine all the other members?
- i don't care if it was a group decision or whatever, the fact remains that every single member should be acknowledged (something Team A manages to do), rather than just one person
- ^ reasons why i don't think Team B is as great of a 'team' as everyone else proclaims
- still it was a great song and i'm pleasantly surprised but honestly they need to cut some of that dead weight
- Team A...i love you guys, but PLZ singer line, work on your breathing
- i know a lot of people thought their song was so-so, but it's my kind of music and i really enjoy kang seungyoon's compositions, so that was great
- JINWOO BBY I'M SO PROUD OF YOU, YOU LOOK SO MUCH MORE CONFIDENT ON STAGE AND YOUR EYES ARE SO BEAUTIFUL AND I LOVE YOUR VOICE, WATCHING YOU TRANSFORM HAS TRULY BEEN DELIGHTFUL, AND THIS WAS YOUR MOMENT
- *ugly sobbing*
- bang yedam, akdong musician and lee hi, i love you guys all so much and i loved your rendition of 'officially missing you'
- yedam has improved soo much i actually like him now
- akdong pls debut asap
- lee hi, stay flawless
- the vocals of yg's next generation are stunning i'm so happy
- i wasn't too surprised with the winner; i don't know if i agree with comments that the program was geared towards team a winning, but i do think that it was engineered to garner sympathy for team a in its beginning stages
- but URGH mino and seungyoon crying and seunghoon hugging bi made me tear up a bit
- you can really see what people are like in moments of victory and defeat
- Team A comes across as truly grateful and humble, in particular seunghoon; i hope you guys stay this way
- Team B, it was weird seeing them cry (they're normally more confident and upbeat) but if i wasn't sure of their passion before, i am now
- they'll never read this, but just remember: you have youth on your side, and i'm sure YG will debut you sooner or later (most of you at least), he'd be an idiot not to
- don't get down, just keep working hard
- as for some B fans who leave hate...grow up; it's ok to think your team was better, you don't need to drag down others just to prove that point
- Team A...this will just be a flurry of emotions so be warned
- at the beginning, they were the underdogs; messy dancing, singing...just a mess in general
- mino came in as leader and as much as i love the kid, he didn't really do much
- they were a more organised mess, but damn still a mess
- i'm so glad seungyoon got appointed as leader; there's something about him that makes the whole team work well together
- looking back, i think the only thing Team A was lacking was teamwork; every member had a different vibe (yes, amanda i just said vibe) that needed to be meshed together and i think the moment they finally managed to do that was the moment they won this competition
- when i look at Team A, i see Big Bang in their first few years of debut; compared to the rest of the boy groups in 2007/08, they were something different, and because of that, they stood out
- i don't know whether Team A will reach the same success as Big Bang, but i do know that they can work as a team now, with a sound that's not like many other groups
- congratulations Team A, and may you continue to 'go up'
side note:
- i doubt yg would make them change their slightly pop-rock style, but i hope it doesn't happen
- hopefully they can keep their sound as it is
- yg has been doing the swag concept for years, and most of the time, they do it well
- but it tires easily and other boy groups have also been doing it and doing it better
- Team B, bless their little hearts, could just not compete with BAP vocally
- in that respect, i'm glad that YG has managed to branch out its style of music
- signing lee hi and akdong musician brought a new flavour to the company and i couldn't be happier
- if yg kept rolling out flop singles like 'the baddest female'...like no. pls no
- seungri was lookin fine...and he was so sweet i love you :')

My mother continued to smoke and drink...she had to be put to bed drunk every night...she was being treated for emphysema and osteoporosis...but she continued to smoke, and when she was on oxygen would remove the tube to have a cigarette: "Honey, it's all I have left".
Roger Ebert, about his mother in Life Itself
Just as actors find it difficult to play 'normal' characters, writers too find it hard to incorporate everyday speech into their writings. It's easy to write for a loopy, flamboyant character; just tap into that secreted zaniness in your own mind. But an ordinary person? How the hell do we do that?
When we talk, it's unconscious. A lot of the time, we say what we feel like with the tiniest of filters, depending on who we're conversing with. There's no careful calculation behind our talking.
I guess that's why writing dialogue for an ordinary person is so hard. Just as it is with actual people, it's the subtle nuances in what a person says or does that gives them that extra dimension, and it's the job of the writer to 'push the character through the door'.
Sometimes, as I watch television and films, I feel that ordinary dialogue is being lost, particularly so in moments of great distress. Too often I hear: 'I loved you', 'Please don't leave me', etc, and too often do I feel very little emotion. There's nothing wrong with phrases like that, of course (people really do say that), but it's their overuse that's starting to wear thin.
Which is perhaps why I was so moved by these words. There is something simple yet heartbreaking in what she says. It's genuine, it's matter-of-fact, and most importantly, it's human. In six words, Roger's mother has done something that too many films have failed to do: she has moved me.
Sometimes, when we write, we get caught up in our imagination. We create worlds filled with life and characters brimming with personality. But in that, we begin to write unrealistically where perhaps a little realism could be appreciated. Don't stress and fret over how ordinary people would behave, go out and talk to people. Listen to what they say. Quote the important stuff. Write about it. There's nothing more evocative than a human voice.
